I don't remember why we elected on this interpretation of the theme but this we did. Essentially it's Simon Says with rules coming in one after the other such as: only walk backwards, stay completely silent, never shooting your weapon, etc... A single violation immediately alerts the guards towards you, which would often cascade as trying to fend them off almost always results in breaking more subseqeunt rules.
In a bit of an art phase from BLAD , I once again took up the mantle of being the artist. At the time, I was also getting back into 3D modeling and wanted that for this game, unfortunately everyone else decided against that. So I thought to try my hand at pixel art, but not your usual tileset approach, rather a more continuous oil painting style somewhat inspired by Hyper Light Drifter.
Looking back, I was far too caught up in the minutiae, the little details, albeit very fun to do. While the real issue was actually my method for shading, leading to everything feeling quite flat in lighting while overly noisy in distractions. It certainly made me respect the amount of subtlety when working with pixel art. Still today, I think a more vectory style is far superior to tile based approaches.
Although the game was technically playable by the end of the 32 hours, we went in with too much hubris, and what came out was quite a mess. And comparing with the jam from 2 years ago , it was only slightly better, and not by much...
By this point, I was getting genuinely fired up about game development. The final product didn't even matter that much compared to the joy found throughout the process. I suppose that's the real value of game jams, drawing people into this rabbit hole.
